How Do I Use Rich Text or Markdown in CoVet to Format Text in My Reports?

Format CoVet records with headers, bold, italics, and bullets, copy them as Rich Text, Markdown, or Plain Text, and keep lists and spacing intact when you paste into Vetera.

There are a number of options available to change the formatting of text within CoVet. Some of these options can even be triggered automatically!

Text Formatting Options in CoVet Records

CoVet offers various text formatting options, including bolding, italicizing, and changing font size, to enhance the readability and presentation of your records. These formats can then be exported into your practice management software.

Manual Text Formatting

You can manually apply formatting anywhere you see text within CoVet.

  1. Access an existing record (e.g., a daily round summary).

  2. Select the text you wish to format.

  3. Use the drop-down menu to select heading styles (Header 1, Header 2, Header 3, etc.) for different font sizes.

  4. Use the bold (B) and italic (I) icons to apply bolding or italicization.

  5. For bullet points, you can switch between typical bullet circles and a numbered list using the respective icons.

Automatic Text Formatting with Advanced Templates

For automatic formatting, you can utilize CoVet's Advanced Templates. (For a comprehensive overview of Advanced Templates, refer to the dedicated video.)

  1. Access Advanced Templates:

    • Go to My Accounts and then Templates.

    • Use the filter button and select the "Advanced" badge to view only advanced templates.

    • Select an advanced template (e.g., "Advanced SOAP").

  2. Edit Formatting within Template Elements:

    • Within an advanced template, you'll find edit buttons for sections, subsections, and individual elements.

    • Clicking these edit buttons will reveal the same basic formatting options: bold, italicize, and headers.

    • You can even format the label of an element differently from its content (e.g., bolding "Presenting Concerns" label while the content is plain text).

Exporting Formatted Text (Rich Text Settings)

The final key step is configuring how CoVet copies and pastes formatted text into other programs, such as your practice management software.

  1. Open your copy settings:

    • Click your name, then App Settings.

    • Scroll down to Formatting & Copying Preferences.

    • Look for Copy Button Functionality.

  2. Choose Your Export Format:

    • Rich Text: This is the format you see in CoVet with bolded text, italicized text, and clean bullet points. Certain practice management software may be capable of receiving and displaying this format directly.

    • Markdown: This is a computer language equivalent of rich text (e.g., a word surrounded by two asterisks **word** indicates bold). Markdown text works well with some practice management software, such as "ezyVet," which can automatically translate it into rich text upon pasting.

    • Plain Text: This removes all formatting, providing raw text. Plain text will work with virtually any software.

Important Note: The success of pasting formatted text into your practice management software depends on its capabilities. Plain text and markdown text offer broader compatibility.

Pasting into Vetera

Do you paste your CoVet records into Vetera? One setting keeps your lists, numbering, and spacing intact, so you no longer need to fix the formatting after pasting.

Every practice management software handles pasted text a little differently. Some turn bullet points into plain hyphens or change the spacing.
The Format copied content for setting tells CoVet which software you paste into, and CoVet prepares the text to suit it.

How to set it up

  1. Click your name, then App Settings.

  2. Scroll down to Formatting & Copying Preferences.

  3. Under Format copied content for, select Vetera.

  4. Click Save.

That's it. CoVet remembers your choice. From now on, the Copy All and Copy buttons get your text ready for pasting. This works when you paste into Vetera's record fields, such as the anamnesis.

Tip: Want bold text to carry over too? Set Copy Button Functionality to Rich Text. You'll find it in the same section.

Default keeps the standard formatting, the same as before. Keep it if you don't paste into Vetera or Shepherd.

Compact spacing (Shepherd) removes the extra spacing Shepherd adds when you paste.

Also, be sure to check out our article on Advanced templates for more details on how to apply formatting automatically.

Please note that there is a very important setting in App Settings, under Formatting & Copying Preferences, called Copy Button Functionality. It affects the behaviour of text that is copied out of CoVet and pasted into another software.

This setting allows you to determine the default behavior of all copy buttons (i.e. both "Copy All" and "Copy" by section buttons) within CoVet.

Rich text is the option that is set by default, so no need to do anything if you like this setting. Note that even when you copy in rich text from CoVet, this formatting will only work if the destination software is capable of accepting and displaying rich text. This ability will vary from program to program.

Markdown text might be useful for people using certain practice management software like ezyVet, which recognizes markdown and automatically formats it into rich text. When using the Markdown option in CoVet, it will automatically insert the appropriate markdown characters when copied even though what you are viewing in the CoVet editor appears as rich text.

Plain text is, well, plain. Still gets the job done though!
