Use Client Handouts to find and share Vetlexicon educational materials with pet owners. You can search the handout library, filter by species or category, preview handouts as PDFs, and send or download selected handouts from CoVet.

CoVet may also suggest handouts based on the case content. You can use these suggestions, search manually, or combine both approaches to find the right materials for the visit.

Who Can Use Client Handouts?

Vetlexicon’s Client Handouts are available to all users.

The feature can be turned on or off per user under “Other Integrations / Connections.

  1. Open a case in CoVet.

  2. Select Tools, then Client Handouts. (If you don’t see it you have to enable it here)

  3. The Client Handouts panel will open.

  4. Browse AI-suggested handouts, search the library, or apply filters to narrow the results.

Suggested handouts are generated based on the case content. Make sure medical notes or records have been created in the case before relying on suggested results.

Search the Handout Library

The Vetlexicon Client Handouts panel includes a search field so you can find handouts manually.

Use search when you know what you are looking for, or when the suggested handouts do not include the specific topic you need.

You can search by:

  • Handout title

  • Condition

  • Medication topic

  • Care topic

  • Related keywords

For example, searching thyroid may return handouts related to hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and other relevant thyroid-related topics.

Search results appear alongside AI-suggested handouts, so you can use both at the same time.

Use Species and Category Filters

The Client Handouts panel also includes filters to help narrow your results.

Species filter

CoVet automatically detects the species from the case and pre-selects it as a filter when possible. This helps keep results relevant right away.

You can adjust the species filter if needed.

Category filters

Use category filters to narrow the library by handout type or topic area.

This is helpful when you want to browse a specific group of handouts, such as condition education, medications, home care, or other client-facing materials.

You can combine search, species filters, and category filters to refine your results.

How AI Suggestions and Search Results Work Together

Vetlexicon Client Handouts now support both AI suggestions and full library search.

AI suggestions are based on the case context, such as the patient’s notes, records, diagnosis, or treatment plan.

Search results are based on what you type into the search field and any filters you apply.

This means you can:

  • Review suggested handouts based on the case.

  • Search for a specific handout by name or condition.

  • Apply species and category filters.

  • Select handouts from both suggested and searched results.

AI suggestions remain available while you search, so you do not have to choose between browsing recommendations and manually finding the right handout to share.

Select Multiple Handouts

You can select more than one handout before sending or downloading.

When you select a handout, it appears in the Selected section.

The Selected section stays visible while you continue searching or filtering, so you can choose several handouts across different searches without losing your previous selections.

To select multiple handouts:

  1. Open the Client Handouts panel.

  2. Search, filter, or browse suggested handouts.

  3. Select one or more handouts.

  4. Review your selected handouts in the Selected section.

  5. Continue searching or filtering if you need to add more.

You can remove a handout from the Selected section before sending or downloading.

Preview Handouts as PDFs

Before sharing a handout, you can preview it as a PDF.

To preview a handout:

  1. Find the handout in the Client Handouts panel.

  2. Select Preview.

  3. Review the PDF.

  4. Confirm whether you want to include or share it.

Previewing helps you confirm that the handout is relevant, clear, and appropriate for the client.

Sharing Handouts

After selecting one or more handouts, you can send them directly to the pet owner.

  1. Select the handouts you want to share.

  2. Choose the option to Send.

  3. Confirm or enter the client’s email address.

  4. Add an optional personal note.

  5. Send the handouts.

The selected handouts will be delivered to the client as PDFs.

You can also download selected handouts as PDFs if you prefer to share them another way.

This is useful if you want to:

  • Print the handouts.

  • Attach them to another email.

  • Save them outside CoVet.

  • Share them through another clinic workflow.

Attach Handouts to a Visit or Discharge Summary

You can include Client Handouts with a Visit Summary or Discharge Summary before generating the final document.

  1. Open or create a Visit Summary or Discharge Summary.

  2. Select Client Handouts.

  3. Search, filter, or browse suggested handouts.

  4. Select the handouts you want to include.

  5. Review the Selected section.

  6. Generate or send the summary.

Selected handouts can be included with the summary email so the client receives both the summary and the educational materials together.

You can preview handouts before generating or sending the final summary.

Tips for Success

  • Review suggested handouts to ensure they match the patient’s diagnosis or treatment plan.

  • Use the preview option to confirm clarity before sending.

  • Add a short personal note when emailing handouts to reinforce key instructions discussed during the visit.
